My research focuses on the molecular biology and genetics of insect baculoviruses. The long term goal of my research is to understand the molecular basis of baculovirus pathogenesis. Of particular interest is the identification and characterization of the genes involved in baculovirus host range and tissue tropisms. I am also interested in understanding host responses to baculovirus infection.

I have been working with several viruses that infect lepidopteran larvae (caterpillars) that are serious pests of agriculture crops or forests. We use genetic mutations and complimentation techniques to identify baculovirus genes that alter host range. These genes are cloned, sequenced, and characterized to determine how they function in cell culture and in insects. Recombinant baculoviruses are constructed and assayed in the laboratory to determine the potential of these genes for altering baculovirus host range and for developing more effective insecticides. Recently we identified two genes that influence baculovirus host and tissue specificity. One of these genes expands the host range of a heterologous baculovirus. Work is ongoing to understand the underlying mechanisms by which these genes affect baculovirus host range. We hope to apply this knowledge to develop baculovirus-based insecticides that are safe, effective, and targeted against specific pest insects.
