Michigan State University has organized six of the biological sciences graduate units under one umbrella, designated as the BioMolecular Science (BMS) Gateway. Admissions and the first year of graduate studies are administered through the BMS. Students admitted through the BMS earn their degrees in one of the participating units. The BMS offers students flexibility in their course of study and research training. Prospective students with an interest in pursuing a PhD in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics are directed to learn more about the BMS at (http://biomolecular.msu.edu/). Complete application instructions can be found at (http://biomolecular.msu.edu/apply.html).

Information for entry into the Ph.D. program may be obtained by visiting the BioMolecular Science (BMS) Gateway web site.
The goal of the Microbiology & Molecular Genetics graduate program is to provide basic education in various core disciplines of modern biology and intensive training in specialty areas relative to a student’s research interests.
Since the Ph.D. degree is primarily a research degree, our doctoral program is designed to foster and nurture creative and independent research. Ph.D. students generally perform rotating research projects (about 10 weeks each) in three laboratories during their first academic year.
Courses offered by the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics are listed below.
