Application forms for entry into the Ph.D. and Professional Masters programs may be obtained electronically at the MSU Office of Admissions and Scholarships web site.  Important: The proper Microbiology and Molecular Genetics departmental code to use for the PhD program is 7030 and that for the Professional Masters Program is 7000.  Copies of applications for admission and accompanying documents, including transcripts of all prior college education, a personal statement of intent and description of previous research experience, scores on the General Test of the Graduate Record Examinations, and three letters of recommendation from mentors or advisors in academia, should be returned to the Graduate Secretary by December 1st for consideration for admission the following academic year.

The goal of the Microbiology & Molecular Genetics graduate program is to provide basic education in various core disciplines of modern biology and intensive training in specialty areas relative to a student’s research interests.

Graduate Degrees »

Since the Ph.D. degree is primarily a research degree, our doctoral program is designed to foster and nurture creative and independent research. Ph.D. students generally perform rotating research projects (about 10 weeks each) in three laboratories during their first academic year.
